TYPICAL MEXICAN DRESS FROM YUCATAN

Typical dress from the Mexican state of Yucatan, consisting of 3 different garments. Each one has a colorful floral embroidery in cross-stitch technique, as well as hems decorated with white lace.

TOP: dress reaching the knees, called “huipil”. It has a square-shaped lapel around the neck called jubón.

BOTTOM: skirt called fustán”.

ACCESSORIES: typical headgear, colored mantilla, and filigree necklace.

RELEVANT DETAILS: this typical dress is the only one in the exhibition with a style that Frida did not used to wear; nevertheless, among typical Mexican dresses, it is one of the most representative and internationally known. Its history – just like the one of the so-called “Tehuana dress” – is a combination of different styles and European influences.

It is displayed in this exhibition to highlight that it is a typical dress from the Mexican state of Yucatan, although the large and colorful floral decorations make it very similar to the current typical Tehuana wedding dress, which is white with a floral pattern. It is worth mentioning that traditional Tehuana women only wear the black velvet formal dress, whose details are provided in the description n. 8 below.
