Director Jodorowsky envisaged Giger as a sort of “architect of evil” for his film and he wanted the artist’s drawings to be made into 3D models for the set. Jodorowsky gave carte blanche to the Swiss master, who created airbrushed works that became a crucial part of the project presentation. One of the most iconic images is the design for the castle of the Harkonnens, one of the leading houses in the saga: the Harkonnen head is a gigantic fortress that protects the castle from attacks by land and air. The front part of the head can be mechanically lowered to reveal a skull that spouts death and destruction. It is reminiscent of the creature that Giger designed for Alien, which has an inner mouth hidden inside a larger mouth.
